8 flights and 2 boat rides later...
I HAZ INTERNETZ! with private destop in out hotel room!

I didn't belive it was possible to hop 4 different major cities in a day. I woke up in Hong Kong. At 730 am we ended up in Macao via boat  and lost  176HKD in casino land! 2 pm we did a trip around Zhu Hai which meant church visits, market visits and at 600 pm checked into our hotel in Shen Zhen then off again eating/ window shopping.

Dear Dad, thank you for killing us.

I should list the cities that I visited in the last 21 days :/
We did do 3/4 of Taiwan in 5 days to start off.
I was actually prepared to dislike Taiwan somewhat since my dad is extremely nationalistic and of course he made many many comments. Out of all the cities we've hopped, Taipei and Taichung remain my favorite. I did have issues with the amount of sugar they put into their cooking though.

Taiwan's culture is also a little strange. Its a mash-up of western, Chinese and Japanese. The first thing I noticed was the 7 Eleven convini shops across the landscape. Like its Japanese counter part, you can seriously live off of them. You can get ready to eat bentos, buns, onigiri and oden. Pay your parking fees and bills and of course all your household and personal hygene items are obtainable there.

Next there are the hotspring resorts. There is a huge district dedicated to it. We ended up in a Japanese style resort which has a private onsen connected to your room and a public one. I was too chicken to go into the public one. According to reports from the brother and the dad, it is extremely nice with a nice view. *sad face* I wish I took some pics of that resort and especially of the private bathroom. It was built pretty authentically from what I can tell.

I guess my favortie part of Taichung and Taipei are the night markets. it starts at around 7-8 pm and ends at around 2 am. They are just tiny alleys of local cuisine and delicacies interlaced with boutiques. I swear everytime I pass through a night market I gain like 3 pounds. OMG the milk teas and bubble teas. I can never taste the ones back at home without crying.

Anyways, this was aupposed to be a brief hello, and belated happy holidays!
With love darlings ~<3

I just found out today that on of the Madhouse directors, Satoshi Kon, has passed away.

I am very very sad. I love Madhouse studios (hello Deathnote, Animatrix?)

One of the power houses of Madhouse studios, Director Satoshi Kon was responsible for Millennium Actress, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers and Perfect Blue.  I've only seen 2 of his films and one animated short. The three projects portray vastly different characters, settings and theme. Kon's defining feature as a director is the way he explores the psychological state of his characters.

(Wow writing is so rusty for me)

He was only 46, and on top of that, working on The Dream Machine, a film I've wanted to see since 2008.

So many pretty things in the artists alley! Its funny how C and I spotted at least 3 artists that sold stuff at Anime North. I wonder if they will show up at Otakuthon too. I guess the most amusing thing about the artists alley was that i stumbled upon this: images.blogcn.com//2008/4/11/12/mtfy19,20080411001054931.jpg
I almost shat my pants (well, my dress. I had a dress on when i saw it tbh). C showed me this about a week before the con. She said she stumbled upon it when she was looking for references for a Link costume. I joked about how it would be funny if they sold that print at AX. it seemed quite impossible because that artist apparently lives in the people's republic of CHINA. At least according to their blog and devart. *bursts into laughter*

Moving on. C and I also had this "which artist is East Asian, Indian, Caucasian" game going on. about 95% of the time we could guess based on their art style. Its funny how subtle details in line work, cross hatching, and coloring (the Indian ones are always beautifully and uniquely textured) are telling of a person's background.

There were alot of crafts in the artist's alley too. Mini embellished top hats, lacy chokers were the rage as were fake sweets made from resin. I almost licked some because they looked so delicious and real. C fell in love with a crocheted hair piece in the shape of a vanilla cupcake with a cherry on top. It was just a cage shaped thing, held into shape by starch (we asked). Someone bought it when we went back the next day to look at it again (and buy it).

I'm glad that alot of my favorite artists were selling their prints at this con. My all time favorites include Noah-kh, Shibakaien, Dina Situ and I suspect Udon Crew. There were others but its been so long since I've stalked devart that I can no longer remember their names. Durarara, Hetalia and to a certain extent Kuroshituji dominated most of the fanart I recognize. There were also quite a few comic fanarts. My favorite one is the guy behind a very gay Robin (come on, he had no tights on, just the underwear :o) and Ronald McDonald Joker.

We also talked quite a bit to some of the artists. Especially to a photographer. He was selling a hard cover book of Cosplays from across the States. It was half in English and half in Japanese. The book looked professional, I'm impressed that he did everything himself, including getting contacts and finding a publishing house plus a place to print and bind his work. He got a friend to translate the English text to Japanese. Apparently he organized over 20k pictures from large cons like Otakon, AX, Fanime, Comic con. Some of the stuff was great, others less so (details like messy wigs and visible hair lines drive me crazy). From what I can see, he likes to use a gray backdrop which makes me kind of sad because alot of great cosplay pics are taken in places with interesting lighting and just plain weird locations (for example a giant pile of constriction dirt which was used to emulate a deserted plain). He also needs to go to Blizzcon. Blizzcon has some of the most outstanding cosplays I've seen in both craftsmanship and diversity. I really do want to go to Blizzcon someday, its just that I haven't played any of their games to really appreciate the con fully (lol they are the evil behind World of Warcraft).

Final haul at the artists alley.

For Me:
3 Legend of Zelda prints (yes I got the one mentioned above)
1 Hetalia print from Shibakaien (The colors are amazing!)
2 Original work.

For Chang:
3 Original work
2 Shirts

Anime Expo was absolutely amazing! I want to go back again when funds allow T-T.

Its completely different from Anime North and Otakuthon because its corporate. Most of the panels (actually, almost all) are hosted by industry guests. Most panels are about new shows in the industry, both north american and Japanese from distributors like Funimation (NA) and Aniplex (JP). Panels seem more like a Q and A instead of an intimate discussion format that I'm used to in AN and Otakuthon. We went to 2 anime viewings, ICE and Gundam Unicorn. ICE is a movie about some weird sci-fi lesbian society (I'm not kidding! should I mention that everyone falls in love with the main character?). Gundam Unicorn is extremely well animated. Too bad we didn't stay long in the Gundam showing. Its painful listening to dub.

One of the highlights of AX for me was its dealer's room/artists alley. I wish i had a week to explore the place. At AN and Otakuthon, an afternoon is enough to see what's being distributed. I think we took more pictures of products in the dealers room than anywhere else in this con. Alot of distributors from Japan came to sell their wares. We have some of the major Goth-loli labels like Baby the Stars Shine Bright, H. Naoto, Moi Meme Moitie as well as Altelier Pierrot. Bandai also had a space. Their display case of Gundam models attracted alot of fanboys (and myself). Some of the pieces displayed are amazing! I imagine that they would cost at least as much as a volks dollfie.

The Copics marker line also came. All professional manga artists use Copics.  I really regret not buying their blender refill...  and a couple of flesh tone makers (they are pretty hard to come by). So cheap! prices are around 3-4$ a marker and refill (they price at 7.95 each marker in Montreal). They also sold a light board! its great for inking! I had 2 pairs of boots and 4 sets of cosplays, 3 wigs as well as 2 large make-up bags packed full for the trip (oh and clothes). It was impossible to buy those and bring it back... regret, regret.

All con, I was was actually on the look-out for Japanese artbooks and magazines. I did find a really nice hard cover Cosmode for 6$ (so happy! It looked about 30$ to me not 6$!) and really really gorgeous linage 2 art book as well as a Gundam design artbook (the sheer genius that went into the designs! at the price of 60USD *le sigh*). it was the last day of the con when we had no money left. I'm kinda ashamed to admit that I did want (and still do) to buy a loli mag. It's so pretty! But the price was 23$. *sigh* maybe it was a good thing someone bought it the next day we went back to make a final decision to buy it.

Another surprise for us was the amount of great steampunk dealers. They had great one of a kind goggles and leather hats as well as clothing, accessories and beautiful jewelry. Too bad we couldn't buy some goggles and glass ware (no place to fit in luggage without damaging it). I did get several business cards. There is a seller who sold a corset which caught my heart. maybe it was a good thing it wasn't my size. AT ALL.

The last 5 minutes of the dealers hall proved a great discovery. Custom made Kuroshituji jackets (essentially very beautiful lacy Victorian). The seamstress/designer is so great she makes them look like real everyday wear instead of cosplay. I'm so sad that she's not going back to AX since she has such a bad location to sell her stuff. It was at the end of the Hall to the side. Most people (like us) already spent all our money by the time we get to her stand. The con's dealers room is so huge that its really unfair the sellers like her. Her stuff is awesome and at the right price range. She also studied in textiles (I believe) and alot of the lace are original designs by herself. She also makes her own textile blends to suit the overall look and texture of the outfit. Alot of her stuff is actually sold in Japan since its so high quality. Here's the link if anyone's interested.
http://starrypetals.com
She takes commissions for outfits. Even steam punk ones, if given the details. I was so impressed, I got an ama loli outfit from her >.>.

So the final haul for me at the dealers were:
Cosmode glamor edition hard cover
Blue Hair facinator
Blue mini loli-ish hat
Ama loli outfit (arrrg noooo..... cannot go down that road. For now its  in C's possession cause it fits her perfectly and I need to lose weight. I also still need to pay her back for it)

For C:
Short blond wig
2 Facinators
Altelier Pierrot loli skirt (ouch that one cost ... alot. Not sure she'd be happy for me to mention the price here)
Velvet steel boned corset (so worth the price. and no shipping!)

TBC
